Freelance lighting cameraman · Aberdeen
Elliot Hornell is a freelance lighting cameraman and videographer for broadcast and corporate productions, with more than 25 years in TV and video production.
01 / The work
I’ve been shooting for more than 25 years: TV news, sport, documentary and corporate work, on offshore platforms, stadium touchlines, windy roadsides, living rooms and stages.
Something usually changes on the day: the weather, the running order, the live slot, how nervous the interviewee is. That’s part of the job, so I plan for it and get on with it. I’m happy joining an established crew or running a shoot on my own.
I grew up in Ellon, studied in Edinburgh, and spent time working on cruise ships in the Caribbean and in TV news in Southampton before coming home to Aberdeen. I work across north east Scotland, the rest of the UK and worldwide.

03 / The kit
I own a lot of my own kit: camera, lighting and sound. I can scale it up or down to suit the production, from a compact one-person rig to a full interview setup with multiple cameras and lighting.
I record sound as part of the shoot, and where it’s needed I can edit on site, for example to turn footage round the same day.
I also work as a director of photography (DOP) or cinematographer on selected projects.

06 / Questions
Straight answers about the kind of work I do, where I work and what I bring.
A lighting cameraman, sometimes called a lighting camera operator, shoots the pictures and lights the scene too, usually on their own or with a small crew. On an interview or a news job, that’s camera, lighting and sound covered by one person.
Yes, that’s me. I’m an Aberdeen-based freelance camera operator, BOSIET certified, and I regularly shoot on offshore installations.
Yes. Aberdeen and north east Scotland are home, but I work in Edinburgh, Glasgow, Dundee and Inverness too, across the rest of the UK, and worldwide when a job needs it.
Yes, I’m an owner/operator, so camera, lighting and sound come with me. I scale it up or down to suit the production, and I’ll send you a full kit list if you ask.
Yes. TV news and sport run to fixed deadlines, so quick turnarounds are normal for me. The deadline doesn’t move, so I plan around it and get on with it. I bring the same approach to corporate jobs that need footage turned round quickly, including editing on site where that’s needed.
Yes. I do SNG, OB and LiveU work, whether that’s a single live hit at the roadside or part of a bigger production.
Yes. As a corporate videographer I film interviews, case studies and events for production companies, agencies and in-house comms teams. I shoot to your brief, and I’m used to putting people at ease who’ve never been on camera.
Yes, on selected projects. As well as operating, I work as a director of photography (DOP) or cinematographer, so if you need someone to shape the look as well as shoot it, just ask.
If the budget and the shoot allow, a dedicated sound recordist is always worth having, and I’m happy to recommend one. But it isn’t always necessary or practical. In those situations I’m happy to take on the sound recording as well as the camera and lighting.
Yes, as part of a shoot. I can edit on site where it’s needed, or shoot and edit a project for you. I don’t take edit-only jobs.
Yes, I’m a CAA certified drone operator based in Aberdeen, and aerial footage can be added to any shoot.
That’s a different job, and it’s what my other company, Reach Video, is for. If you need help working out what the film should say, and then directing, shooting and editing it, have a look at Reach Video. If you already have the plan and need an experienced camera operator, you’re in the right place.
Start with Reach Video. That’s where I help businesses work out what story to tell and how video can support it, before anything gets filmed. This site is for productions that already have a plan and need a camera operator.
